Jonathan,

I agree with you, designers should know psd slicing, psd to html conversion, etc. Some designers prefer to code HTML/CSS themselves as it gives them much better understanding of implementation of designs.

Designers need to know fair bit about coding, but they need not code themselves. This PSD to HTML work can be outsourced to companies like ours who would do it at a fraction of the designer's cost, not to mention the advantages of specialization like cross browser compatibility, XHTML validation, etc.

No really your want the smallest image slices possible for adding to web sites. You shouldn't use to many big images because this will dramatically effect the load times of your web site. If you have a menu thats all the same across the page then use a slice and repeat the process so it looks like one long image. Thats the reason for slicing and coding.
