Yea I loved whois.sc/ it's a great tool. But now it charges to see what other domain names are resolving to a certain IP address. There is an alternative that gives you the full whois but I can't remember it and it's free.

http://whois.ws/ is nice place for checking the availability of domain name..
You can also check the availability using the http://www.tucktail.com/ .

Some of these look-up services are shady; they sometimes take a name you typed and put a hold on it, so if you try to buy that name with another company, it'll show that somebody has put a hold on that name and you can't buy it!

That's true. GoDaddy, Moniker and a few of the other big players are known to do this.

The one I linked to above doesn't do this - I coded it, and it queries the WHOIS servers and displays the results, nothing else. Hence why I recommend it

I would recommend domainsbot.com or domain-suggestions.domaintools.com for this purpose. It would give suggestions on available, expired and other information on domains.
