I'm looking for a Canadian web host for a local non-profit club for whom I'm designing my first real web page.
I'll need cgi-bin, perl read write and execute, perferrably unlimited bandwidth as we hope this will become a very popular page, a reasonable price, good telephone support, the web host to take care of domain registration, and I'd prefer to deal with a Canadian or even BC company.

If any of you have some advice, please let me know.

Thanks,
~Cordelia~

Hi Cordelia,
One thing you want to be sure of is to NOT go for a host that offers unlimited bandwidth. Be sure your host states up front about the bandwidth! Too many have fallen victim to the old unlimited trick...once the site gets popular, etc. you find your site delete with no warning.
Most all paid hosts are going to offer cgi-bin and lots of other good features for a reasonable price.
I will recommend Greg at http://www.pureideasplus.com
His business is located in Canada, and I do know he offers phone support for his clients.
If you decide to look at any US hosts...visit our site.
We have clients round the globe!

Good Luck!

Hello Cordelia.

I agree with Martie about the "unlimited" feature. Few things are truly unlimited. There's always some limit. Maybe very high, but still a limit. If bandwidth is a concern for you better to find out up front what the limit is then to be surprised with a charge later.

Hi Cordelia,

Webhosting.com is a well known Canadian web host but they are not recommended. A lot of people have had bad experiences with them.

Good luck with your search!

I have been with my host, http://www.exahost.com for a long time now, and they're Canadian. I believe they have an office in Montreal and in Charlottetown. I am really happy with them, and my site has only been down during their upgrade; it was only down for 5 minutes, but they warned me well in advance. I recommend them highly.

Good luck with who you choose! And, be sure to research them... my tip to you is, pay attention to customer service.

Jenn.

Thanks for all of your suggestions. I have decided to go with wedohosting in Victoria, BC. The domain is accessible now, but I haven't had success ftp'ing - I think because I'm behind a firewall here at work. I'll be trying from home tonight. Of course, if that doesn't work I'll really be giving their customer service a test!!

happy surfing,

You've got a host! Keep us informed on how well they do in the customer service dept. I'm sure you'll be FTP'ing in no time flat!
