As a business: Does anyone use real testimonials on their website to help sell their product/service?

As a user: Do you read the testimonials on a website and give them much weight in your decisions?
Jaiem
Personally, no.

There's no way to verify the testimonial. And even if you could who don't know who the person giving the statement is. It could be the owner's brother-in-law for all you know.

With that said, we have them on our sites because customers like to see that sort of thing.

Jaiem, that was pretty funny. Do you provide any contact info or indetifiable information about the person providing the testimoinal? Are they real?
Martie
Yes, we have a testimonial page. The reviews are real, and as verifiable as can be.
Ours are published in the form received.
If they include email ONLY with no site url, then thats the way its gets put up. They might include their site url and no email.

we send testimonials created by sites hosted on our servers, verified by the whois for the domain names
Jaiem
On our hosting site we put the links to the sites the people have with us.

On our e-comm site we just give the name and location. We've asked people for permission to put up thier email address so potential customers can contact them for verification. But we met with much resistance to the idea. Fears of spam.

Have you thought about providing them with a form mailer? Yes, really savvy spammers may be able to pluck their email from the source code; but it would allow you to let potential clients contact the makers of the testimonials.

I think that asking the client for putting their contact info on a site is kind of too much. We usually ask different clients for giving us references depending on the project - that minimize the overhead to our existing clients.

The idea of putting the name and company's URL seems reasonable. At least then they feel like they get something too (even though that is not why they did it). They might get a little extra traffic. If someone wants to search out there contact info, then they do so.

As a costumer is always nice to read some good reference to a service and as much information on the person that gives the testimonial the better. But for me is just one (and probably the least important) references when chosing a service.

rch23, why are they not important in your decisions? Are you skeptical that they are not real?
