Well, supposedly the 4th and 6th largest web hosting providers just merged.

http://www.hostpro-interland.com

So, if they are 4th and 6th with that many accounts, who in the heck is #2, #3, and #5??? I know verio is #1, but who is in the other spots???

Curtis
Tommy
Well Globix, Exodus, Digex etc. are always quoted as some of the biggest but if we're talking accounts then unfortunately CI Host must be up there with companies like:

pair Networks - 100,000+
Valueweb - 100,000+
Superb Internet?
Webhosting.com?
Addr??

Taking a wild guess here. Who wants to add/delete from this list?
Curtis Stevens
Yes accounts. Pair says they have like 108,000 hosted sites, but who knows how many accounts that is, 50,000???

Addr - I heard 50,000 before their bad news came out.

Regarding CIHost, hahahaha, I don't believe that. For a company to have such a bad rep on the Internet, they are the last ones that I would believe. They are probably counting the domain names they have registered! Not actually hosting accounts. What company in their right mind would put a link on their main web site that says Cancel your Account, if:

1. You are getting so many cancels that you can't handle the volume, or ????

I'm sorry, but a good solid host wont just put "Cancel Your Account" all over your main web site, what does that tell your visitors???

As goes for the others, hmmm, who knows???

The web is a very good way to fool people. You can give off the impression that you are a large corporation, but it could be just ran by one person in an apartment, for all the customer knows! You see, you don't actually have a real store front, a building or something, for people to really see. All you have is a web site, which can be made to look like it, but you CAN'T build a fake buidling!

I know what you mean, some companies quote domains hosted, some quote accounts and like you said some quote websites.

CI Host's have more sign ups then people cancelling accounts and according to reports they have reached the 100K mark. Either they have a good PR dept or someone is telling porkies. And yes, why on earth would you put something on your homepage about cancelling accounts? Strange one that
Curtis Stevens
It is kinda like the Domino affect, and it is bad on the web. One person will claim to have this many and the other guys will say well if he says he has that many, then we will say we have this many, etc...

Have you ever seen CiHost's data tour? Just a bunch of kids, no board of directories. I know that a lot of kids are smarter than hell in this industry, for systems admin, etc.. But MOST big companies like Verio, Webhosting.com, HostPro, all of them have a board of directories with older, more professional people. But CiHost doesn't, so that kinda tells you something. Have you ever tried to call them? I have heard stories of people waiting for hours just to talk to a sales rep.

But you see their ads all over Hostindex.com and I think that is where their main traffic comes from because they don't advertise any where else anymore, not hardly. Wonder why??

Many of the large web-hosting providers claim to be number 1, and depending on what data goes in to the rankings, and where it comes from, usually a publication or some sort of contest. Or whether their marketing department has just given them the accolade.

It could be gross revenue, square footage, money spent on marketing (Interland, definitely), number of domains hosted, number of customers, quality (Conxion-5 nines), burn rate (Exodus, you can tell their facilities by the smoke rising up off all that VC money going up in flames), oldest(UUNet).

I wonder about some of the companies that operate at the top of a network of resellers, are they counting all the reseller's resellers' customers in their own account figures?

Most of us can find some way to honestly say we are number 1, as long as we put the right spin on it.

You may be the Number 1 web hosting provider in a particular area (or the only web hosting provider in that area). You may be number 1 because you were the first in that area. You may be number 1 because of a survey done by the local chamber of commerce.

Number 1's are pretty meaningless except in the hands of marketers, then they become valuable tools to attract customers.

All that ranking of businesses seems to is to provide telemarketers and sales people with targeted lists of the most potentially lucrative companies to cold-call.

I love this internet thing! It's like a follow on from school where you always tried to one-up your friend...... my dad's car is bigger than yours etc..

Now there are so many self proclaimed #1's it really doesn't matter too much, people can always vote with their feet if you don't do a good job for them.

One of the legacies of the big brick building is the big rental payments.

This isn't a shameless plug but my business is run from an office at home, so as a result the prices charged can be kept down because I am not suffering from legacies of over extravagance in the "good old days" 1999 I mean!!

The merger between #4 and #6 (real or self proclaimed) is likely to continue until there is a handful of companies left.

BY the way I use HostPro and have always found them to give good service....so let's hope that now they are number 3? or whatever the service continues.

My only concern is that they look after me and my customers.

Only "certain" sites will take their ads. Theyre also advertising on webhostmagazine and tophosts. Last time we let them advertise with us they left us sitting on an $18,000 debt. Never paid us a dime!

The make most of their sales via their reseller network. They have over 7,000 independant resellers. So if your reading this and looking for a new host, be careful you never know whose really behind that pretty looking web site
Curtis Stevens
Did you give them advertising without them paying??? I thought all ads are suppose to be paid up front, I have always been told that.

Why didn't you stop their ads before they ran that amount up??

That is funny, really funny. Never thought of it like that!

1. We implemented the paying up front policy as a result of the CI host scam
2. Their order was for a lot more than $18,000
3. We let the ads run for 6 weeks before pulling them.
4. Glad I made your day

PS: this happened over 12 months ago, so I've stopped crying about it. I guess the Ferrari will have to wait a while......
Curtis Stevens
Well, lets all thank CI Host!!!!

Why not just take them to court? I bet a ton of people like to see you do that, maybe you can run them out of business, sue them for a couple million???

PS: $18,000 is a heck of a lot for only 6 weeks time!!!!!

PPS: So does that mean they can't win an award???
