I just wanted run an idea past some of you guys/girls.
Firstly im aware that this probably isn't a new idea, however it doesn't seem to be all that commonly used.
Basically, instead of offering xzy hosting plans etc....allow customers to build their own hosting plans.
e.g. choose x storage space, x email, x mysql, ecommerce etc.....
The main theoretical advantages being:
- Diferentiation e.g. your not yet another $7.95 web host etc..
- Customers percieving that they have more control over their hosting plans/costs.
Anyone have thoughts on possible pitfalls with regard to this? Or better yet anyone tried this?

The problems with this is that, many do not know how much bandwidth storage they need so they like sticking with regular plans. Also, this will make your pricing a bit more stricker and might not be worth it overall.
Lets say you charge .50 GB and like $1 500mb of storage.
they the only wanted a gb of storage and only 250 mb of storage, this would create a $1 profit for yoru account. This is actually pretty much not worth it. Of course this isn't the only scenario, but rather just 1 lousy one that can happen. =)
Many have tried this an have failed and some still use this idea.
Overall, I disapprove this method, not only because this complicates things more, but makes it harder on the subscriber itself.

The "build your own plan" scenario makes it difficult to project the company's profit margin/earnings. There are indeed possibilities like the one mentioned above, in which you would probably be forced to charge higher rates on each item in the package in order to come up with a reasonable plan price.
Many web hosts will taylor a plan to the customer's needs if they request it - if they have needs beyond what is offered in a pre-packaged deal. This gives the customer options but also allows the host to calculate a custom price for that situation.
Off course the work is going to be extra......
when the customer going to be statisfied and when this bring more business means
what's wrong in this?????
