What the heck happened to these people? Are they out of business?

Akashik.net is COMPLETELY off-line. ALL client sites and email and even their own company website and email.

This is terrible. At least they should have an alternate way of communicating with their clients (and vice versa) in a time like this.

They are hosted at NAC. NAC had a big problem today with about 90% of their servers going without power for a few hours.

The only floor I believe that might still be down is the third floor on nac and that may be why they are still down.

We are on NAC as well and it has been hell for us, but we actually were back up a few hours from when it began.

Several hosts were/are affected by this outage. I dont have specific details, but I think NAC is slowly getting the servers back online. We wish Greg the best and I have all confidence that he is working to get services restored.

My experience with Greg and Akashik for the last five months has been excellent. Patience is the word for now.

Hi,

With the last day or so I didn't get around to checking this forum. My apologies.

As stated NAC had a power failure brought on by a fire in their datacenter. After several hours, that power was restored. At that time server one (which holds both our DNS information and our company website) refused to come back online.

We were eventually told the server had gone into hard drive failure, and would need to be restored. Again, as that server is our main DNS no other server would respong to httpd inquiries, even though they were online.

A decision was made to best make use of this downtime and shift accounts to another datacenter. Currently all accounts are fine (the result of back up procedures), and the main nameservers have been switched to point to the new datacenter.

The end result is that once the nameservers resolve, accounts will be on brand new servers sporting both twice the CPU power and RAM within a datacenter we've found to offer greater connectivity.

We do apologise for the downtime. It's been one of those collection of incidents you don't ever expect to happen at once. However I can say we're working hard, and plan to be back online very soon. In addition extra steps are going into place to not only lower the chances of this ever happening again to almost zero, but in the slight chance they ever do, we'll be farmore prepared to take positive steps to ensure a far quicker resolution.

Web hosting is a challenging business, and the last day has certainly proved that. Rest assured we're still around and plan on being so for a very long time into the future.

As soon as the main site is back online we'll be sorting through what I presume is going to be a lot of e-mail. If for some reason your inquiries or concerns are misplaced, feel free to contact us.

A more involved statement will be posted once we get everyone back online.

Hey, Greg,

What should we be specifying for nameservers. ip-sys.com or something else?

I borrowed some server space today and I'm in the process of moving sites. But if it's going to be a short period, I'd prefer to just set the new (or old) nameservers and wait.

For what it's worth, I've had friends in Australia trying to call your mobile phone number (the one in the whois register). It's not answering.

I should have thought to look over here.

While I am sure everyone completely understands that bad things happen sometimes, that's no excuse to be completely out of touch with your customers. A good host should have a backup plan to allow contact to and from clients in a time of outage.

It could be something as simple as a backup (non-akashik account) email address for both akashik and clients, such as Yahoo or Hotmail. Then you could send out one mass mailing to keep everyone informed.

Don't get me wrong, Akashik & Greg is a GREAT host. But, respectively said, this incident must result in revisiting their level of support quality in a time of crisis.

True. I found that I have a similar problem, though. I don't have alternate e-mail accounts for most of my clients. That will change; in fact, it already has changed.

I'm just relieved to know that I won't have to move 30 domains from hither to yon!

Hi Bill,

Your nameservers will remain the same - the're currently resolving to the new servers, so nothing needs to be done at the customer end.

All accounts are being populated with your website data as I type this.

We're just fighting time right now and the whims of the internet to get them pointing in the right direction.

The new datacenter was actually a planned move, but NAC's troubles and server one floating belly-up to the top of the tank has made the move far from what we'd been looking towards.

In a cruel twist of irony a part of the move also included the very thing that would have kept everyone informed... the off network support domain. Once we get you all back online and functioning it's the next thing on the list.

Incidently, you should be able to check your sites via this URL:

http://63.247.129.10/~username/
(username replaced with the account username, retain the trailing slash)

For control panel access use the same IP address

Other servers are having their data added now, and is almost complete.
