Why is it that all the hosts I've seen so far seem to want to offer a bit of everything and not actually focus on one type of service. Its very unusual to see a market where the sellers want to sell everything. Surely there are better margins to be made by focussing on a type of business that needs hosting services and then specialising your support to that group. Just a thought.

I agree with you NetGuy, the budget we-do-all hosting market is now very crowded. It makes sense to target just one area and go all out for it.

Thanks Tommy, for a minute I thought it was just me who had seen the problem! Niche is king in most markets, it just seems that hosting hasnt developed that far yet.

I agree too, NetGuy. Our organization has long emphasized the benefits of niche marketing in the hosting industry. It's definitely an effective way to differentiate yourself in a business that's so broadly undifferentiated ... and an even more effective way to generate attention when you're just starting out.

Of course, one reason more hosts don't do niche hosting is that they haven't identified a viable niche ... or don't understand that niche well. I think you have to be sincerely interested in serving a particular segment of the hosting market (whether it's developers, home-based business owners, work-at-home moms, gamers, whatever), and have to know the needs and interests of that segment inside-out. Not a skill everyone has, but for those who do, the hosting business can offer good potential.

I was just reading both of yalls thoughts and just would like to say they are good... I think thats the best way to go is to focus on a niche which I haven't done because I do not know which one I really want to focus on...

I am more of an idea person that can give u thoughts and consepts in all areas and the sky is the limit. I guess thats why I havent yet but your posts have made me think about it for...

Thank you,
