If i have a web server set up here in the office, can i have a backup site hosted so that if my local server goes down, users are automatically routed to the web host and my backup server?

why do this? i want total control over my primary server and like to know where it is and how well it is currently running. But i do need a backup server somewhere.

I think i once read this is called "fail over routing." does it really exist?

I know its possible. If you have a look at http://www.innerhost.com/clustered.asp you can see that it is definatly possible on a local network. I'm not too sure if it is possible to have a local server and a remote one. Why don't you get yourself a dedicated server? Its virtually the same as having one in your office. You can use it via PCAnywhere. The only drawback to having a dedicated over a server sitting in your office is the fact that you are relient on the hosting company to reboot the machine for you. The advantages are a lot better. If you want details about dedicated servers then look in the spotlight area at http://www.webhostdir.com/spotlight/server.asp . Personally I would go for a dedicated server hosted.

With out getting into to much detail, there are many companies that offer dedicated servers. If you go with a company that is redundant, then you won't have to worry about your site going down. Also as Adam has pointed out if you use PC Anywhere then you can connect and work on your server like it was still in your office.
