I'm interested in becoming a web designer. right now I'm in college yet only a sophmore which means I'm still taking me elective courses right now. I wanted to know what kind of web design programs and languages should I learn to at least get a feel for what I'm about to get into. I've made web pages before but only in HTML. I'm wanting to do something more advanced with programs like Shockwave, the Adobe Line, as well as other Macromedia products. I've also heard of Cold Fusion but don't know that much information on it.

I would like to know what other people think and would recommend to help learn these programs. I registered a domain name and parked it yesterday and would eventually like to get it running. Last but not least I did see the Web Hosting area about the different companies. What company and plans would you recommend for type of page I'm interested in putting up. My main concern is size, speed, good customer service, and compataibility of the programs I'm going to be using. I'm looking for a monthly fee of around $25. My domain is registered with GoDaddy.com. I'm debating to put up the site with them are still shop around. Any suggestions are more than welcomed. Thank you

Well, You should start off by using Photoshop, by Adobe, There are tutorials everywhere on the Web for Photoshop! If you can afford to pay for proffesional Training then go for it!

Flash is for you if you want to make Very interactive sites, or Very advanced Animations, once again, there are lots of Flash Tutorials!

When it comes to web pages, you could do with looking into PHP, its kinda the new Age of Webpages!

The only sites i can really suggest for tutorials on all the above are;
www.spoono.com
and
www.robouk.com !
Take a look at them, some really nice tutorials there!

Best of Luck

Here is my opinion:

When web page designers first invented themselves, they were true web masters. They did the page layout, the graphics, if any, the back end development and the server maintenance. In the professional world of big business there are very few of these left.

Corporate America wants you to be as specilized as possible. Web Master has been broken down into designer, artist, developer, engineer and maybey a few other positions, depending upon the size of the company.

Since I am a self employed web "master" I do everything, and occasionally hire a engineer or developer when things get over my head... not usually. If your planning to squeeze into corporate America, you need to choose.

If your good at art, go into the design/art type area. Learn Dreamweaver and Photoshop. Learn Flash too. Learn HTML also as this does truly help, but using an editor, like dreamweaver, speeds things up. Also learn ccs and xml. Javascript is helpful but good editors generate code for you, you just need to customize it.

If your more scientific and work well with languages go into the development area. It's also my opinion that you can branch off into a development/design or development/engineer area of work. I mean some people will develope full blown control panels that integrate with every function of the server. Some people will develope front eng application to dynamically control the layout of a page or the content there of. Learn PHP, Perl and some kind of sql. I recommend MySQL. Learn unix shell scripting. I hate windows.

If you like playing with parts, hardware etc.. then your an engineer. Learning some development code like php and perl will help you. Learn protocols, protocols, protocols. Learn routing configuration. Of all the above listed positions I think an engineer makes the most $$$ but it takes a special kind of geek.
