Speaking as a newbie host consumer, I chose based on a
combination of things including service (I sent several inquiry emails to confirm tech support speed and knowledgeability,) reputation (I checked forums,) cost, features (I compared at least half a dozen hosts,) reliability (in addition to uptime claims I observed the different sites over a period of 2 months) and site design.
The site design is definitely important because it's the first thing you see and is the first visible indication (though not a guarantee) of a well organized and intelligently run company that takes the time to introduce itself to me. Its colour alone wouldn't necessarily turn me off -- if it's well designed, the colour (scheme) too should be well conceived -- it's all part of the whole.
Site design (including colour) is not the only thing I looked at in choosing a host but it's important. Of course, being a designer, I like to support good design
I have been told by many people that "blue" is considered the best color representing a corporate feel. What do you think?

Yeah, blue is considered by some to be corporate, but it all depends what hue is picked and how you use it.
www.blacksun.ca who I chose as my host is professional, but not bland and sterotypical.
