Coreix, one of the UK’s leading hosting providers, has made a 20 year commitment to the World Land Trust to become the UK’s first carbon neutral data centre.
<img src="http://www.webhostdir.com/images/tree1.gif" alt="Coreix" width="304" height="229.5" align="right" hspace=5> Coreix knew it needed to do more than just talk about the environmental costs of its business, when it could not guarantee that all of its electricity was going to be provided by renewable sources. So, after much research, it opted for a partnership with the World Land Trust. Businesses in the UK are increasingly relying on IT to run their operations, which means that more and more power is needed to run data centres - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Reports show that on average, a data-centre in the UK uses more power in a year than the city of Leicester.
Imran Boota, Managing Director of Coreix, said: “We are delighted to be a trail blazer with our green agenda. We want to be a leading example in our industry and we hope others will follow in our footsteps to make the UK’s data centre industry much more environmentally friendly.”
Each year the World Land Trust will plant a 1.2 hectare area in one of its two Ecuadorian projects for Coreix. Over a twenty year period this will sequester all of Coreix’s annual carbon emissions.
“Planting in the equatorial region has been scientifically proven to be the most efficient way to reduce carbon dioxide. The method that we use to offset carbon emissions through restoration ecology not only helps tackle the effects of climate change but also helps to protect whole ecological environments - helping threatened species of flora and fauna to survive.” added Imran.
John Burton, chief executive of the World Land Trust, said: "We are delighted to welcome Coreix as one of our first corporate partners. As businesses are becoming increasingly aware of their responsibility to the environment, they are turning to organisations like us for a solution. We believe it’s a major milestone that a key player in an energy intensive industry is taking such a responsible approach.”
Sir David Attenborough, a Patron of the World Land Trust, has previously said: “I welcome WLT’s new Carbon-balancing programme as a way of helping put back what we are taking away. I would urge everyone to think deeply about what is important in life and to consider the consequences of daily activities. Balancing your carbon emissions with the WLT means that we are able to put even more back in to our key objectives – acquiring land for conservation.”
About Coreix
Coreix specialises in high availability managed hosting services and solutions for small, medium and enterprise-level businesses. Coreix has its main data-centre facility based in London. For more information on Coreix visit
www.coreix.net.
The Coreix data centre produces 19.35 tonnes of CO2 per month or 232.2 tonnes each year. Its electricity use runs at 45,000 kWh per month.
The 232.22 tonnes of CO2 require 1.2 hectares of land to be planted between to offset Coreix CO2 emissions over a 20 year period. Each hectare will sequester approximately 9.5 tonnes of CO2 each year.
Funding from Coreix supports the World Land Trust’s Ecuador Carbon Sequestration Project, specifically Reserva Buenaventura and Reserva Yanacocha.
About the World Land Trust
The World Land Trust is a registered, conservation charity (Charity No. 1001291) which has helped purchase and protects over 350,000 acres of threatened wildlife habitats worldwide, including rainforests. Funds provided by corporate partners are used to acquire and maintain new habitats as recognition of carbon emissions their businesses may produce.

The land being purchased for carbon offset is up to 80%. The main priority for the tree planting and carbon sequestration programme is to ensure that an appropriate mix of native species is planted. The seedlings are grown in nurseries using locally sourced seed and as the natural forest cover is restored in areas that have previously been cleared, WLT can ensure that the forest restoration is ecologically sound and therefore promoting full biodiversity and habitat conservation.
