Hi! I'm posting to ask for the opinion of those who have upgraded to vista from XP. What are the advantages of the upgrade if I'm using laptop?

I'm not sure there are any advantages, from what I've read battery life suffers under Vista due to the Aero interface if you intend to use it. I'm currently using Vista on my desktop, and XP on my laptop and I'm yet to find any compelling reason to install Vista on my laptop.

Don't change Windows XP for Vista. It's just waste of time and that's all.

I don't think Vista is a good solution.

Vista is a great OS, but microsoft is losing it. They are trying to compete with Apple too much that they are losing their professionalism while Apple focuses on the younger generation with their sleek icons and graphics.

I like the speed of Vista and the less frequent crashing, but the design overall is kinda crappy, I dont use Aero because I figure why waste $$$ on a graphics card just to support a Windows theme?

Sometimes I wish I had stuck to XP.. But sometimes I'm glad I'm on Vista.

So really I would just dual boot it and see if you like Vista or if you want to stick with XP.

Well, if vista consume a lot of memory is you read microsoft recommendation. It takes at least 1GB of RAM! well, think of this way, I myself running windows XP in 512 MB RAM, sometimes I still find kind of slow when I run certain applications such as open office, firefox, a may be a couple of firewall, anti-virus stuff.

so imagine you put vista on a 512 Mb ram machine, due the quantity and quality of vista, it ends up running very slow and what it does, your system will immediately put you on so called "virtual memory" status that is generating RAM from your hard disk which slows your system.

an I/O read from is hard disk is much slower than the I/O rate from RAM.

so don't even think about it to upgrade if your system hardware is not ready upgrade.

i hope this helps

If your computer has at least 1GB of ram and a decent video card then upgrading to vista isn't so bad, A lot of people would prefer to keep using XP as it has been around a lot longer and there aren't near as many bugs for it. XP also has a lot more drivers, older drivers will not work very well with vista. Also keep in mind that early 2008 Vista's Service Pack 1 will be released. If you choose not to get it now then SP1 would be a good time for it. If you get any version of Vista i would recommend Ultimate and only Ultimate, Although I wouldn't purchase this by itself, it is cheaper to buy a new computer with it pre-installed than it is to upgrade directly to Vista Ultimate most of the time. It really all depends on what you need.

i dont see any advantages in upgrading to vista due to a number of reason:
1. Most softwares do not support the new platform.
2. Very little graphic enhancements that cant already be obtained on XP with various softwares like stardock etc.
3. Not as secure as microsoft touted it as.
4. MEMORY HOG.

From what I see, I have one PC on Vista and one on XP,
Vista is only more visual.
