YES YES YES YES YES
If my opinion is considered , YES , it does put customers off.
Even if you do get customers by selling hosting dirt cheap;...they wont be quality customers...
they will be customers like 12-15 year old kids who have some extra money in paypal and want to start off their own website
DONT ever try the stunt of overselling / offering hosting cheap...
It is tested and experienced by many...
it does not work out that way

it will not attract customewrs as on the web hsoting market there is a trend that it is better to pay a bit more and get reliable hosting then get unlimited everything for cents

web hsoting = web hosting

That's a very good question.

I won't trust this if it's below $5.5/ month, too.

A key point to remember is that there are quite a few established, wealthy shared hosting companies out there that can easily afford to lose money on an account in the short term to make money in the long term... That's why you will see some hosting companies offering ridiculous amounts of money (like paying affiliates $100 for referring an $8/mo account) to drive new business.

You have to create value to justify your prices, and if you can't do that, your chances of getting off of the ground floor are slim.

It's not the cheapness of an host that puts customers off, it is the bad work of the respective companies support, maitainence and quality of products.

In my company, we try to even between the two although we do kind of lean more to the new comers side... but it all depends what type of people you want to serve... Of course dealing with all experienced webmasters would probably be a bit easier...
