When you're looking for a new web host, chances are you've seen hosts screaming out in bold type how much bandwidth they have, but what is it?
What is Bandwidth?
Bandwidth is the way web hosts measure how much information is sent to and from their web servers. When you purchase webhosting, you are usually doing this so the public can access the information you want to share. It might be pictures, documents, videos, and/or music. If you want people to be able to access these things you are going to need bandwidth.
Sample Web Site
Imagine that Bob is setting up a family web site for immediate family (his wife and 2 kids) that only they will be able to access. On this website Bob has uploaded 200 pictures that are 100KB each and wants to know how much bandwidth he should get. Well, if someone were to visit Bob's site and view every single picture then the amount of information shared (bandwidth) would be 200 x 100KB or 20,000KB or 20MB or .02GB
This means that if each family member were to download the entire 200 pictures the site would still use less than a GB of bandwidth in a month. .02 x 4 = .08GB
Bob doesn't need very much bandwidth!
How Much Bandwidth Do I Need?
This varies for a lot of people, but of course everyone wants the most, even if they're not going to use even 1% of it. However, here's a helpful hint on how important a host's bandwidth should be to you, depending on your site's focus.
Site Type - How Important is Bandwidth
Music/Video Downloads - EXTREMELY IMPORTANT
Pictures/Galleries - Important
Text - Not Important
Basically the more graphics, videos, and music you want to share the more bandwidth you are going to want, so please take this into consideration when choosing a host!
And if youre site does become popular, with lots of people viewing it daily, it doesn't matter what kind of content your site has, you're going to need tons of bandwidth!

Used bandwidth depends by:
- number of accesed pages / mo
- size of pages (depends by size of text, but especially by size of images)
- other features: chat (audio/video), upload or download of large media files (movies or audio files)
If your site is just launched, it will probably not requires too much bandwidth, but in time it is expected that number of site visitors to increase, so more bandwidth will be necessary.
In conclusion, a new site could be hosted with a shared hosting plan, but when the necessities will increase, a VPS or dedicated solution should be considered.
