View original thread:  Support issues with Reseller Account

Hi all,

Great to be here

I`ve been running a reseller account for several months, mostly nice and quiet with little to do. Server has been great so I have had little support to deal with. That was until today.....

My provider was down for almost eight hours. Because I`m on a reseller account, all the eggs are in basket so the speak. My support, billing and everything else are on the same server.

This obviously caused problems and clients could not communicate with me as my own main site was down as well as theirs. Not only was this frustrating, but pretty embarassing too.

I started thinking about opening a shared account elsewhere and running the main site from there, thinking that would help. Then of course, Doh - what about the domain, nameservers and all the other problems that would get in the way!!!

Can anyone advise on what I could do so I can avoid this potentially awkward situation? I don`t mind downtime (sort of) so long as I can still communicate with my clients.

Thanks.

You could host your site on another and still have the same DNS, that would be fine. Another option is to use your domain providers's DNS servers and just change the DNS to your backup if they are down, just make sure to make sure mail records are redundent on both.

Could you explain this one in laymans terms. I did get much sleep last night so the brain is not firing on all cylinders today!

If you post a step by step way to do this, that would be much appreciated. Thank you.

First of all, have you created a back up to restore all of your files, after you have done that you can host with another company with the same dns but what before you do that contact the hosting company again and see if they are back in business, dont take decisions so fast, it might affect your existing base.

So take care

Sure, ruftly here it is.

1. keep 2 sites at diff hosts
2. edit the dns zone at say enom to point to one ip, if that one is down edit it and change it to the backup
3. should take 10 to 20 min to switch over, just remember once your first sites are up if you have clients on that server your email will be on that server as there is an entry in the mail settings.

just do a search on google or webhostingtalk for more info
