When you're looking for a new host and want to see how they perform across the world, what do you guys use to test the speed of the host from different places around the Earth?

I know that some hosts seem very fast, but that might just be because they're in the same city as you

You can do a simple traceroute to those servers and look how many hops you have to go through to get to that host. You would mainly look at the tail end of the results to see how many hops they truly are from a backbone or whatnot. This can test for latency.

This traceroute will also give you the details of what major backbone they have to go through, as well as if they are deeply embedded inside another company or whatnot. The more hops you have to go through, the slower they generally are.

This might not be the best way to do speed performance, but it is a good start.

Get a ping IP and a test file.

Thanks

Hi

Let me set a example, now it truly depends upon the hosting company, We all know there are companies located somehere in asia, but they are able to provide good services in japan .
Now basically i will be looking for uptime guarantee, specifications and most important 24/7 customer support.

Technicality and professionality should be maintained at full cost without any comprimise.

cheers

One tool is alertra.com, it will tell speeds from several points around the earth. But my advise is ask the host first because they may have a user on a dedicated running what he wants and his server into the ground and another server which is managed and has a completely different speed.

Alertra is definitely a solid choice, but doesn't it cost money to get a server checked out from mutliple places around the net?

I've been using this: http://just-ping.com/ for a bit now and it's a pretty nice way to check the ping from many sources. Hope you guys get some use out of it

I have just checked out, just-ping.com, it looks pretty good and is quite fast in showing up results.

Just enter your domain name at the top of the alertra screen and it will check you from 6-7 sites for free. Use it all the time. Just-ping sounds cool too.
