Im new to web hosting. Some questions
Can you have your sit hosted in a country out side of your own?
If so what are the advantages and disadvantages?

Does anyone here do this? If so what have been your experiences (particularly problems you encountered doing this)
Thanks

1. You can
2. If the servers are in USA it is better as most of the servers are there and with better management and technology and so on.
3. My experience is cool - no problem so far.
4. advantages are - fast servers, good speed, better management and fast support.
5. disadvantage is - costly phone support (if needed). Mostly it is not required, email support is good enough.

Yes host should not be a big one otherwise support may be delayed and services may ne troublesome

Here are some answers:

Yes definitely you can. This is the internet so as long as your host is online, you can view your site anywhere in the world and access it to change it as well.

If so what are the advantages and disadvantages?
Advantages:

If you're like me who lives outside the US, you will find that hosting accounts are cheaper in the US than if you get it in your country. Also the service are more reliable and the technology is more advanced in terms of hardware and software. Plus competition in the US for hosting is stiff driving costs down and service levels up which is good for us consumers.

Disadvantages:

Notable disadvantage is the support issue when you need to contact your host badly. Unlike when your host is around the corner or in country, you can probably drive there and check the problem yourself.

You may also end up paying much for telco costs and have to bear with them getting back to you during US business hours (which is night for me).

In summary:

But overall, the advantages outweighs much of the disadvantages so I would say you should not worry hosting your site elsewhere expecially in the US.

Hope this helps.

My vote is to the US hosting co. They have the best connection, like OC1, OC3, etc so you don't have to worry much about the speed from where you are.

The phone support is not always reliable when you are outside of the country due to a long wait, expensive international rate, etc. I would say test their email responses, because that will make a big difference to resolve your concern.

My experience with telp support is always negative. They are not as helpful and friendly after the fact that they've put me on hold for over 10 min.

Good Luck
There are no problems with purchasing from a company located in another country. The only two points I would think about is:

1. You usually get faster speeds when your location is closer to the data center
2. Watchout for the language barrier.

thanks All
Information was most helpful
The reasons I ask is that the offers from the USA seem far superior and cheaper to hosting in the UK (where Im based).

Along with cost and features you will want to consider the market you are wanting to target as it is generally easier to target a UK market if your hosted in the UK but can still be done with US hosting but seems to take a little more work.

having the host from same country can be helpful at times - with phone support or with a local IP for seo purpose. But unless high quality cheap hosting is available in your country - its better to host outside. I use US hosts all the time and I am not from US. never had any real problem.

In no way do you have to have your site in the same country as yourself.

The only thing you should look for is #1 does the country has laws to protect you #2 does the country have hosts that you can trust #3 does the host have vendor relationships which are long standing and in good shae.

From our experiences in 11 years as a host we have dealt with vendors and data centers in the United States and in the UK. Both of those are reliable. We have had previous problems with data centers in Canada, not sure why but do not use them anymore. Those are the only three countries we would ever consider using as a data center vendor, so on a user level the answer would be the same.

A number of hosts now operate support using Skype which means you can get telephone support for free...

A lot of hosts don't offer phone support and just keep support limited to chat and email and they're doing just fine..phone support is no longer a priority like it used to be
