Could you please tell me the difference between VPS and Shared. I do not have good knowledge of linux servers and how they run, but isn't a vps supposed to be more reliable, however, if the server hangs, doesn't the vps serer hangs with it as well!!!

The difference between shared and VPS is with VPS, you have access like your own server. You have ability to restart services and your apache server if necessary. You also can host multiple domains, and be your own reseller, install applications in the server.

Shared plan is limited to manage your own account.

Hope this helps

Do a google search for "VPS FAQ". Most of them are host-specific. A VPS will be just like a dedicated server in every sense except that it's not physically a real server (hence the name, "Virtual Private Server").
A VPS is basically a managed server except the server resources are distributed between multiple people. On a VPS you will have full root access to run server level tasks.

A shared plan is just a way to host a basic website.

VPS - Virtual Private Server technology presents multiple isolated server environments on a single physical server. It uses its own disk space, RAM, CPU, IP addresses and it can be rebooted independently. Each VPS performs and executes exactly like a stand-alone server. In nearly every perspective you can see a VPS as if it’s a dedicated server.
Shared hosting - There are many clients on a single server and they share the resources of a web server.

But would it not be that if the server hosting the VPS servers is getting many hits by one of the vps, it would impact our vps too. Do I have to worry about patching it all.

Yes, abusive hosters may impact other VPS on the same server. Remember that you are still sharing the resources (CPU, Memory etc) with other VPS owners.

As to patching, you can install your own softwares on your own VPS without really affecting other VPS within that server.

To me, VPS is a hybrid/median of shared hosting and dedicated server hosting.

Hope this helps.

Thank you..... OK what do you think, Now I am thinking about VPS and Semi dedicated.
(I am not a linux guru, so I am very afriad of security holes and things of that sort)

As an unwanted advice, I would recommend you not to think of a VPS, unless you need more power(say, you own configuration, root access, SSH access) etc. For non technical users with a few normal-medium sites, a shared plan is the chepest and easiest. I have seen few people really struggling with their VPS.

Well, you can opt for a vps only when you need that much of space and bandwidth, other wise it is no point to to do so, as it will be waist of time, money and energy.

Well if you need to know more about vps you can check this post in a blog -
