sounds like spam to me.
I dont see how spammers can really be succesful with spam but obviously people do buy stuff off that crap or they wouldnt do it. I think thats something everyone needs to do is fight spammers like this guy, they say now 80% of all email running through the net is spam.

All this is correct. First thing, you want to make sure you have throttling software because you don't want to press a button and send 150K emails. You need to send them slowly.

Secondly, you do need a dedicated or a VPS. Dedicated in this case. I know I have a few customers like this and its quite a spike. And beyond that dedicated servers are not just automatic. No dedicated provider wants an IP address banned because of spam issues. These addresses would need to be clean, opted in, etc. Otherwise you would just get banned and you don't want that.

yea sending that many emails in one day can cause a lot of problem... Suggest you send little by little...
