Can you please tell why does almost everyone who needs t ochose web host asks about bandwidth and disc space since more than 75% or website owner do not use the quotas they are offered by web hosts?

A very small number of requests consern databases, different software applications and etc.

The only reason for going after big numbers would be that most people do not have a clue about the website business...? Hope I'm wrong! what do you think?

hi

Well it depends on what a person is actually looking for, every concept of hosting company is unique and its also depends upon the requirements, hence its put forth first.

That's really true! Most people are lured with the amount of diskspace and bandwidth when they purchased a hosting plan. In reality, most of them are not even used 50 - 75% of the amount of diskspace.

Why do you want to pay $6-15 for 5000 - 10000 MB diskspace, if the actual diskspace you needed is only 100-300 MB? It's very wise to look for hosting which is suitable on our current need.

A hosting co. which offers lots of diskspace and bandwidth may be overselling.

My two cents

hi

over-selling is quite possible....

See the thing is with lots of disk space and bandwidth is the fact that when people who dont know anything about website design or anything like that and you throw them big numbers like 15000MB of space then they are like whoa! thats a lot. the space is rediculous but the more bandwidth the better because if you have a sucessfull website you dont want your clients reaching a bandwidth excedded page half way through the month. You do also need to look at MySQL now because every little application is database driven even though you can share a database by using multiple prefixs but thats not fun. Thats my two cents.

They ask for those numbers because they need a gauge of how to offer the services as compared with the competition. If they can lure you by giving more than what you need, then bad for you. But if you can get it at the same price, then maybe good for you.

I say maybe good for you because of the caveat attached to it. Not all "big hosting" is really big from a customer satisfaction standpoint. Most offering those are overselling so you run the risk of being placed on a shaky server which can ruin your online business later.

Also, those numbers are needed as "cap" or "max" you can avail for the service. Imagine if all hosts have no numbers to play with. All will be unlimited and there will be no competition anymore.

It.s true most of the users do noy use the alloted diskapce and bandwidth, what they should be looking for is the quality of support and the alloted CPU resources for their type of account.

Hope people learn and stop looking at the wrong numbers before they buy hosting services

How do you know they do not use the quotas they offer? Are you accusing any companies of doing this?

How else would someone advertise there company if they don't mention how much bandwidth and disk space they offer?

Seems like you need to go to some research about Web Hosting.

Seems like you didn't understand the question! Buddy, he was saying the customers themselves won't need the high quota thats being offered! He was not accusing the hosting co.s, but your response really make me what kind of cusomer support you guys must be giving. For gods sake, please read the question carefully before you start answering!

Its another fact that all the host have some other catch, like CPU usage to kick the user if he start using a good percentage of resources thats being offered. Smart, isnt it?

Coming back to the original question I guess lots of people have unrealistic expectation about their website. Lots of bandwidth make them feel that they wont have a problem in the future.

True that most websites wont use the diskspace and bandwidth but it always pays to get more than what you need in terms of future growth as its always better to be prepared than to be slapped with a $200 bandwidth bill. Besides $6 - $15 a month aint nothing.

It's true that you might not need all of that space and may well never even get close to using the bandwidth and disk space provided by hosts these days.

However, it is nice to know that it's there in case you do need it. It's why a lot of people like to use gmail because they know they have 2+GB of disk space, but most people never even get close to 10% of that number.
