If you are a reseller how much should you sell your space for?

Adam,

How long is a piece of string? - Now i personally hate that phrase and as a child I remember that the teachers in school used to say it all the time trying to sound clever. Years later, I realised that they were trying to say that there wasn't a right or a wrong answer or that it's all unkown and it can be whatever you want. Well re-selling is just like that! You sell how you want, when you want and for how much you want.

I was a reseller once and I based my prices on how many plans I needed to break even. Money was an issue for me and I needed to balance the books very quickly so my prices were set accordingly.

Remember that this is a very competitive industry and there are thousands of hosts to choose from in the US alone so make sure your prices aren't too high!

Good luck

Thank you I was just thinking about going into the reseller business so that I could get my site hosted for free. Perhaps I will reconsider this if the business is that competitive. Are you a reseller? Is it difficult?

Thanks

and then some!! I can certainly say Ive been there and done that!! I started as a reseller in 98....worked for one company and then later went to another one (the last one was a good experience, but still alot of work) Went on and got my own machine and now I dont offer a reseller plan. Reason being, is most hosts DO offer a resell plan..and honestly there are more than enough out there to pick and choose from. We would rather deal strictly with our own clients one on one? We are considering some type of referral plan though that would pay $$$ to the client instead of free space or something. This would save the person interested in reselling from having to get setup to accept cc payments, etc....a lot LESS h***le for that person!

First sorry TJW I really should read posts a little better in future.

Thanks for the reply Brian. As a reseller do you need to take your own payments? I was expecting my host to do that. Thinking about it though it wouldn't make much sense. I like your idea about handling a lot of the work for the resellers. It would increase theres and your profit margin but not having to handle with credit card payments. I will have a look at your site and consider it.

Cheers to everyone who posted.

I definetly agree that referrals are the way to go! I have a hosting business myself and feel that reselling would just be a h***le for anyone when referring can make them good money and at the same time have nothing else to deal with. Basically just 'marketing' ?

You also loose some control by using referal instead of reselling. For example, typically the host you refer for sets the price and determines the features offered.

Our Account Executive program lets you sell any of our plans, we do the billing and support and you receive a monthly commission (not just a one time payment!).
