The Addition of ScamBlocker Complements Industry Leading Virus and Spam Blocking Protection for Subscribers
EarthLink the nation's next generation Internet service provider, today announced it has upgraded the EarthLink(R) MailBox by adding its anti-phishing feature, ScamBlocker(TM), into the desktop e-mail client. EarthLink subscribers are now virtually protected from accessing phisher sites when they receive spam in their inboxes. Subscribers can download this latest update at

ScamBlocker warns subscribers about accessing known or suspected fraudulent URLs that mimic legitimate Web sites and are intent on stealing personal information. The application enables customers to analyze individual e-mails and rate the safety level of each message before clicking on an embedded hyperlink.
"Consumers need all the protection they can get against the increasing number of online scams and threats when sending and receiving emails," said Kevin Brand, EarthLink's vice president of product management. "By combining ScamBlocker with spamBlocker and Virus Blocker(TM), EarthLink subscribers have three of the most powerful protection features available to consumers in a single, easy-to-use e-mail application."
Recently, industry experts reported that over 70 percent of consumers are concerned about e-mail fraud. ScamBlocker helps stop this criminal activity from propagating across the Internet. Customers that receive e-mails suspected of containing phisher site URLs can immediately send them to EarthLink for real-time evaluation.
EarthLink subscribers can best protect themselves and their families from receiving dangerous spam by setting spamBlocker on its highest setting, which will block virtually 100 percent of junk e-mail from their inboxes. Combined with this new ScamBlocker feature, these tools significantly minimize the risk of ever being exposed to, or duped by, online scams.
The EarthLink MailBox also includes Virus Blocker, a security tool that scans incoming messages for viruses on EarthLink's e-mail servers before they are downloaded to subscribers' computers.
Along with innovative security features, EarthLink has a long history of fighting spam through legal action, legislative support and consumer education. EarthLink has filed and won lawsuits that have stopped spammers from generating millions of spam e-mails on the Internet.
Other features in the EarthLink MailBox include real time search functionality that enables subscribers to find anything in their inbox as fast as they can type, eight e-mail addresses per account, and 100 MB of storage for each e-mail address.
ScamBlocker launched last year as an application in the EarthLink Toolbar(TM), which is free to any Internet user, not just EarthLink access subscribers. To date, over 1.3 million consumers have downloaded ScamBlocker. Non-EarthLink access subscribers can download the toolbar by going to
