I am thinking on starting a web hosting company of my own and was wondering what I would need to do to get the actual server that would host it up. I dont know if I should use a dedicated server or get a T1 line for my server or something like that.

I would suggest to go with a dedicated server... You'll benefit all the structure in place by your hosting company... and you'll get the freedom of managing your server the way you like ! Morever, they always have ups and things like that, which you might no be able to afford at start.

You might want to use HostQuote to get different quotes from different companies !

You can also look into starting with a reseller account.
you will be limited to the types of services you can offer as a hosting company, but you'll have a smaller initial cost.
once you cover your reseller costs with a few clients, you can then easily move up to a dedicated server.

Ya I suggest going with a reseller account and when you are big enough move to a dedicated server, that way by then you also know the business better and will be ready.

Web Hosting is identified as fast growing and profitable industry. Venture capitalists are taking keen interest in WebHosting Business. This is the only business where investment vs returns are excellant.

This business is based on trust. Total devotion by providing excellant services to your customer is nessisity. Your growth depends on your satisfied customers.

In order to start this business first you have to think how much money you are willing to invest. How much time you are willing to send on it.

If you are willing to invest $ 15,000 - $ 30,000, you can buy your own servers and co-locate. You decide which customers to target. You survey how much these customers are willing to pay for features/resources they want.

You decide which Hosting Controller is best suited to your target customers. You make various hosting plans. Design a webhosting site where you will sell those plans. Setp you bank account. Setup your merchant account/payment gateway.

Setup you server cluster, install necessary OS and applications. Host you website.

Decide how you will sell your plans. With above budget, you may think of advertising at WHT, googles etc. Make sure you have 24 hr team to answer sales questions promptly.

If you do not have that kind of money and just your time, you can start as reseller. By spending $ 20 - $ 40 per month you can expect 5-10 times returns. If you do not have enough time, many hosts are providing annonymous support for small fee based on per user. You can look for business in your local newspapers specially those who do not advertise their websites. If you design websites, you can get both businesses ie designing their website and hosting it as well.
