Recently, I've been considering starting a free (banner ad-supported) forum host with a friend. So, I've been wondering: What do I need for this?

My friend has an old PowerMac G3 we could upgrade, but only a DSL connection. What would be the minimum connection required?

Also, would it be better to get a hosting reseller account, or use a datacenter?

Thanks.

I would not host this on a home PC, especially with the very low cost of reseller accounts. The bandwidth you will be able to offer will not be great with a home DSL connection. If you go with something like H-Sphere, you can create bulletin board hosting packages very easily, but other control panels will typically either offer this too, or allow you to use scripts to get it done for your customers.

Bottom line: Get a reseller account and focus on your business.

Totaly agreed reselle raccounts are cheap enough to justgo get one but if it does take off be prepared to get a dedicated have one that you are looking at before you actually need it

DSL connection or a hosting on a home based pc will not be very efficient. If you are looking to grow fast, start with reseller then rent a dedicated machine if you can manage it yourself...

You can search for reseller or dedicated plans at www.hostmarker.com
Or you can even request free quotes from leading hosting companies...
