Intelligent Routing Gives Fast-Growing Hosting Company a Competitive Edge
RouteScience Technologies, the leading provider of adaptive networking software, today announced that Carpathia Hosting, Inc., a high-performance Internet hosting and bandwidth service provider, has chosen RouteScience(R) Adaptive Networking Software (ANS) to provide the "smarts" behind its Carpathia Intelligent Routing Network (CIRN) and help it achieve a competitive advantage. RouteScience ANS allows Carpathia to deliver 100-percent network uptime and high-quality bandwidth to its customers with the scalability Carpathia needs to accommodate its rapid growth. This has helped CIRN quickly become the preferred network for online games, video streaming, ad serving and other applications demanding the absolutely fastest network routes.
CIRN is built exclusively atop N+1 redundant, hot failover Juniper Networks hardware, and employs RouteScience ANS to monitor and analyze traffic flows across each of its 21 transit and peer providers for latency, jitter and packet loss. These base level network parameters are then processed through a series of ANS application models that determine whether the providers are delivering adequate levels of service for the specific applications, such as multimedia, VoIP, Web and enterprise. If RouteScience ANS determines that a provider's service is not meeting business policy objectives, it will adjust the path automatically in real time to an alternate provider in order to ensure that the application user receives the highest levels of performance.
"Every application uses the network differently, and what is unique about the RouteScience Adaptive Networking Software, and one of the primary reasons why we chose it, is its ability to specifically tune our network for each type of application and deliver high-quality bandwidth to our customers," said Rick Smith, chief executive officer of Carpathia Hosting. "Online gaming is a huge growth industry, but it is very sensitive to network performance and quality of bandwidth. By choosing our large number of providers carefully and managing their service delivery with the RouteScience software, we have been able to create a network that gamers love."
While performance improvements vary by application, Smith says on average they see about a 30 to 40 percent improvement in overall network performance above the basic BGP routing with RouteScience ANS controlling the environment. ANS also enables Carpathia to detect problems its providers didn't even know they had, and offer concrete evidence pinpointing the issues and detailed records the providers can use to track down and resolve these problems. RouteScience ANS monitors all of Carpathia's transit providers, ranks them based on a range of different criteria, and allows Carpathia to give each of them a report card. Carpathia selects its providers based on performance, and the information provided by RouteScience ANS gives them a much stronger bargaining position.
"We are pleased to have Carpathia Hosting join the expanding family of forward-thinking customers who appreciate our unique approach and value proposition," said Mark Lazar, CEO of RouteScience. "As quality of service and application availability issues gain in importance for a greater number of businesses, only a solution that focuses on true end-to-end application delivery can achieve the kinds of results these businesses require to effectively serve their customers and gain competitive advantage."
Carpathia did a very intensive search and looked at virtually all the products on the market, performing live tests of several of them. Carpathia was also interested in the science behind the products, and talked in detail with the developers at each of these companies to get their philosophy on how their systems worked, before choosing RouteScience ANS.
"We liked the concept of the RouteScience approach, and felt it made the most sense and was the most scalable for the kind of growth we were seeing in our company," said Smith. "RouteScience also had an impressive client list, and was a proven leader in the industry."
Similar in concept to the way power and telephone companies manage their networks to ensure business continuity, RouteScience ANS adjusts the WAN to the service demands of distributed enterprise applications based on business policies and on what the software learns dynamically as it monitors and assesses application quality. Its business-level view of network operations focuses on how applications -- rather than networks -- are performing, ensuring continuous availability of business-critical applications that translates directly to both top-line revenue and bottom-line dollar impact through greater productivity and lower costs.
