View original thread:  What screen size is normal?

I have sort of a dumb question:

Don`t 99% of people have their computers set on a "800 by 600" pixel screen size setting?

Cause i just went to Gateway to buy a computer but all the computers they had there were set on a "1024 by 768" pixel screen size instead....so every single website you viewed on the computers there looked awful.....all REALLY tiny and squashed together.

And the guy working there said that i am COMPLETELY wrong and that a "1024 by 768" screen size is what 99% of people have set on their computers.

Jeez, someone quickly go right click on their desktop and click on settings and check what size you have and tell me if i`m wrong or right? Them jerks at that computer store have me all confused.

You want the possible highest resolution unless you have sight problems like I do.

Mine is 1024 X 768.
Mine can go all the way up to 1600 X 1600 though

I'm using 800x600 as are most people I know....
Tommy
I generally run on 1024x768 but sometimes go higher.

I think the last stat I saw on res was 64% of users run 800x600.

You find these stats on the internet from sites like www.websnapshot.com and if you want to gather stats of your site visitors there is www.pcdataonline.com.

I'm running 1024x768, I think it depends on the type of users. Most techies I've worked with, want the biggest possible monitor you can squeeze through the office door, and set it it to the highest possble resolution.

Mr Chunder
The generally accepted industry standard for GUI/web development is 800x600. It has been at this level for a long time and still is.

All new computers in the last few years usually support at least 1024x768 but it seems until recently, they were shipped from the manufacturer at 800x600. Nowaways, OEMs are now shipping this machines pre-setup with 1024x768 which is much better because it is the first thing I have to change with a new machine.

Give it a few more years and very few will run 800x600. I think too many people do not know about the display settings or there are still too many 15 inch monitors or old machines out there.

For the moment, it seems that we have to stick with 800x600.

How about starting a campaign to get everyone to switch to 1024x768......
Tommy
Most websites just don't have the content to fill a 1024x768 resolution.
Frosty
Yuck!

I hate the way websites look when your computer`s set to the 1024X768 size. Everything you view on your computer then is REALLY tiny and sort of squased together. Jeez, doesn`t anyone know what i`m talking about? Oh well.

Cause my website looks really bad in my opinion when you view it at a 1024X768 resolution cause then it`s all really tiny looking and squased together kind of.

Tommy
Hey Frosty, I know what you mean. But I kinda like it. I like fixed width sites. It's like a box of chocolates, you always know what you're gonna get.

You know you could always code your site to scale to the browser width like here at WHD and the forums.
Bgrant
I use a larger monitor and tend to have resolution set higher, so that you can view more code easily. 1280x1024 is what I usually run at.
Frosty
Tommy.....i can?

My website is kind of a table in the middle of the page (kind of like www.jaguarpc.com has) and the width is supposed to be 700. But when you view it at a 1024X768 resolution it get really tiny and turns into a width of like 400. And that looks bad.

Is it possible to code my site so that it always looks like it`s being viewed at a 800X600?

I`m going crazy cause my website looks normal on my computer.......but the more i check it on other computers.....it looks screwed up.
